In our clinic we have two ways of obtaining these healing cells, from blood and from marrow. We primarily use the blood source but will describe the marrow below for completeness.
These marrow cells come from the patient's own hip bone (not from fetal). By taking the bone marrow cells from your own hip bone, we avoid all the ethical controversy and end up with a natural system to help improve and heal tissue.
The cancellous bone of the iliac crest hip bone has 80% bone marrow.
Our bone marrow may contain stem cells. One type of stem cell in our hip bone is mesenchymal stem cells. These immature cells may have the ability to become tissue like cartilage, bone and ligaments
The bone marrow aspiration (BMA) procedure is a concentrated serum of your own cells, the procedure is considered "autologous point-of-care, and we do not expand or manipulate the marrow product other than placing it in a centrifuge. Bone marrow aspiration started in 1970. The procedure is done in our clinic. The hip area is injected with a local numbing medicine. Marrow is then collected from the iliac crest of the hip. This marrow aspirate is separated in our office centrifuge. The bone marrow aspirate is then injected into the joint under direct ultrasound guidance. The procedure takes about 45 minutes in total.
What do we treat?
We are now using bone marrow to treat osteoarthritis in all the joints in the body
Before the injection
Patients should be off over the counter medicine such as: ibuprofen, naprosyn and steroids for 2 weeks before the procedure. Baby aspirin (81mg) is ok to take.
After the bone marrow cell therapy aspiration injection
You will have relative rest for 1-2 days, then start or restart a physical therapy program targeted at your area of injection.
